Such a pleasure to interview Joey Cofone! I met him when he was a student in my Typography class at the School of Visual Arts, and he is quickly becoming a design superstar. His Baron Fig notebooks are a staple!

Ever since I cancelled cable, I’ve been doing a ton of skillshare courses. It’s so nice to be on the receiving side of learning! I’m loving the lettering courses, and thouroughly enjoying using new tools and surfaces.
Lara McCormick is a nationally recognized designer and educator, and currently Head of Design at CreativeLive in San Francisco, CA. She is the author of ‘Playing with Type: 50 Graphic Experiments for Exploring Typographic Design Principles’ published by Rockport Press.
Lara is a gifted speaker and has given inspirational presentations and workshops on design and typography across North America for organizations including AIGA, RGD Toronto, STEP magazine and TEDx. Her work has been featured in several notable design publications including HOW magazine, PRINT, Graphic Design USA, DesignObserver.com and highlighted in numerous graphic design books. She is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Sappi‘Ideas that Matter’ award.
Lara received her Masters of Fine Art in Design from the School of Visual Arts, and a post-graduate degree in typography from Cooper Union. She is committed to design education, social activism and investigating change.

Responsible for building the college's new graphic design program. Wrote and designed all curriculum and developed coursework. Hired and managed faculty, mentored and advised students. Courses taught include Graphic Design 1 and 2, Typography 1, 2, and 3, Senior Portfolio, Campus Design Studio and Senior Project.
Introduced the first film course to the school, which required purchasing of equipment, studio set-up, hiring of faculty, software acquisition and training (Final Cut Pro and AfterEffects).
Developed campus-based design studio DSGN (Do Some Good Now), which provides design services for non-profit organizations in the local community.
Championed acquisition of letterpress equipment and its incorporation into Typography coursework.
Developed new logo and style guide for the college, implemented branding strategy across platforms, including marketing and in-house print materials, outdoor signage, apparel, email newsletters, and website.
Wrote the book 'Playing with Type: 50 Graphic Experiments for Exploring Typographic Principles'
Published February 2013, Rockport Press. Designed the cover and interior layout templates for the book. Worked with editors and asset managers, adhered to strict deadlines.
Taught courses within the undergraduate graphic design program and Continuing Education. Courses include Visual Language, Color Theory, Design Procedures. Also designed and developed two courses, Designer as Citizen, and Experimental Typography. The 'Designer as Citizen' course project was awarded the Sappi "ideas that Matter' grant. Student work from the Experimental Typography Course 'What's Your Type' received numerous awards from the Type Directors Club.
Created and implemented new identity for the College. Developed institution-wide style guide and managed digital assets for use across multiple platforms. Implemented branding strategy and insured consistent application of brand guidelines. Responsible for creation of key marketing materials including school catalogs, annual reports, look books, exhibition materials, magazine advertising, environmental signage and web graphics.
Focus on the Sunday Review and Arts & Leisure sections of the New York Times. Work extensively in InDesign, communicate closely with photographers, illustrators, and editors to ensure effective end results. Source photography, illustrations and information graphics from a selective freelance pool.
Taught Communication Design I and II within the associate degree program on the Manhattan campus.
Worked on web and print-based projects for non-profits.
Oversaw the Design Department. Spearheaded the NASAD accredidation process for the department. Hired and managed faculty, developed curriculum. Taught classes per semester including web design, animation and motion theory, advertising and senior portfolio.
